Alois Lageder

Alois Lageder winery is located in the southern part of the Alto Adige appellation, in the small village of Magré in northern Italy.

The father of the Lageder winemaking dynasty was Johan, a carriage-maker who moved to the city of Bolzano in 1823 and started selling wine. In 1855, his sons inherited his estate. Alois Jr. decided to do more than just sell wine. He wanted to create his own unique wines with special taste and character. That's how the young winemaker bought his first vineyard. His son followed in his footsteps and expanded the company's holdings by buying new vineyards in the village of Santa Magdalena.

In that period, the winemakers were focusing on producing white wines. The situation changed when Alois' grandson, Alois III, took over the management of the winery. In 1934, he made a bargain purchase — the estate and the lush vineyards of Löwengang. There he started growing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.
These days, the company is managed by Alois IV from the fifth generation of the family. The winery's team strives to take care of the nature and save resources. For example, the roof of one of the Alois Lageder wineries is fully made from glass and equipped with opening windows. This design provides for strong lighting and therefore saves energy.
Alois Lageder is one of the most famous and titled wineries in Italy. It is one of the producers of the Institute of Quality Italian Wine — Great Brands (Istituto del Vino Italiano di Qualita — Grandi Marchi).
Today, the winery uses both modern and traditional methods of winemaking, and since 1990, 50 hectares of vineyards owned by the family have successfully used biodynamic principles.
The company produces about 130,000 cases per year, of which 75% are white and 25% red wines. Alois Lageder wines are successfully exported to over 50 countries worldwide.
